the moldy peaches "s/t"...

By Jay Campbell

Do you remember when you could make the whole classroom go "OOOOOOOHH" by loudly calling out some expletive (tell me I'm not alone here)? That's what the Moldy Peaches seem to be able to channel on their debut release. With lines like "who mistook the steak for chicken/whom I gonna stick my dick in" ("Steak for Chicken"), it's hard not to let out a little defiant giggle, even from the most grown up of us. In fact, there is plenty to giggle about. When they aren't being gleefully raunchy, they're being down right absurd - "I wanna be a hippie but i forgot how to love/It's hard to be a garbage man when a sailor stole my glove" ("Who's Got The Crack") - or some combination of the two. What shows through most though is a lot of honesty. Tracks like "Nothing Came Out" lament that "You're probably holding hands/with some pretty skinny girl that likes to talk about bands/when all I wanna do is ride bikes with you/stay up late and maybe watch cartoons," while "Anyone Else but You" proclaims that "We sure are cute for two ugly people." Paired with extremely lo-fi production, and vocal mistakes, laughing and voice-cracking, the words only become more stirring. Constantly making you double take - whether at the wit, or the cuteness, or the sheer vulgarity - the Moldy Peaches will definitely get your attention. And Keep it.
