Have fun with a diagonal construction and slipped stitches while making this graphic striped hat in contrasting colors. It's worked flat in the beginning, on an angle starting at the front, until joining in the round to come together in back - this is a design that will make perfect sense once you get going, but will never bore even the experienced knitter!

Choose a bright colorway for a hat that really pops, or a more neutral combination; or you could choose two similar colors for a subtle hat that's more about texture than stripes, or pick out one solid and one self-striping yarn for even more added interest!

There is an optional crocheted edging, which will prevent the edge from curling up; if you don't want the crochet edge, there is a variation with a ribbed front which will also prevent curling (shown in the navy and gray example).

The pattern is both completely charted and completely written, so you can choose to work from whichever you prefer. There are 3 (adult) sizes, which are determined by slight changes in gauge.

The stats:

Sizes: circumference - 20 (21, 22)" / 51 (53.5, 56) cm; height - 6 1/2 (6 3/4, 7)" / 16.5 (17, 18) cm; intended to be worn with 1" / 2.5 cm negative ease.

Yarn: approximately 100 yards each of 2 colors in worsted weight; yarn used in samples is Sunflower Yarns Windham (218 yds / 199 m per 100 g skein; 100% Superwash Merino). (bright version: Darcie and Honeydew; neutral version: Windward and Silver Gray) Blocking is important, so choose a fiber content which will block well.

Needles: Size 6 (7, 8) US / 4 (4.5, 5) mm for sizes small(medium, large) - a circular needle 16"/40 cm long and a set of 4 or 5 double pointed needles. Hat size is determined by gauge; adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

Gauges: Size 20" / 51 cm - 22 sts and 45 rows = 4" / 10 cm in garter stitch; 23.5 sts and 30.5 rows = 4" / 10 cm in stockinette stitch. Size 21" / 53.5 cm - 21 sts and 41 rows = 4" / 10 cm in garter stitch; 22 sts and 29 rows = 4" / 10 cm in stockinette stitch. Size 22" / 56 cm - 20 sts and 37 rows = 4" / 10 cm in garter stitch; 20.5 sts and 27.5 rows = 4" / 10 cm in stockinette stitch. Gauges listed are for flat swatches; the gauge on the actual hat will be different due to the slip stitch panels pulling in and affecting the garter stitch gauge. It is important to work a swatch, wash it, and let it dry flat without stretching in any direction to obtain gauge for the finished size you desire. Since garter stitch rows are extra stretchy, the row gauge is not nearly as important as the stitch gauge.

Techniques used: slipped stitches, knitting flat and in the round, long tail cast-on with no slip knot, optional crochet edging.
